A Chinese research vessel, Shi Yan 6, has been allowed to conduct “marine scientific research” in Sri Lanka, despite objections from the US and India. This is the second time in two years that Sri Lanka has permitted a Chinese research vessel to carry out such activities. The vessel, currently located off the western waters, is engaged in research activities in the seas off Bentara in Colombo. The research will be limited to western waters, and scientists from the National Aquatic Research Agency, Navy personnel, and the University of Ruhuna have been given clearance to go on board.
