Thieves loot ornaments, cash worth Rs 68 lakh from jewellery shop; two held

JAMMU, Nov 14: In a daring heist, thieves targeted a jewellery shop in the Upper Gummat Bazar area during the nights of November 12 and 13, and decamped with gold, silver, and cash amounting to approximately Rs 68 lakh.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Dr Vinod Kumar, said that two individuals have been arrested in the case besides recovery of all the ornaments and the cash within 10-12 hours of the commissioning of the crime. According to him, a comprehensive investigation is also underway to unravel the intricacies of the case.
Owner of the looted shop (Ram Kapoor & Sons), Ram Kapoor recounted that the thieves exploited the Diwali night festivities, breaking into his establishment while neighboring shops were shuttered, and people engaged in firecracker celebrations.
“Capitalizing on the cacophony of crackers, they infiltrated my shop, making off with approximately 1.163 kilograms of gold, 3.64 kilograms of silver, and cash valued at about Rs 68 lakh,” he stated.

The SSP Jammu, Dr Vinod Kumar, said that a First Information Report (FIR) was promptly registered under the relevant sections of the law followed by the constitution of special investigating teams, led by SDPO City North, Sunil Kesar and aided by SHO City, SI Mohinder Singh, under the overall supervision of SP North, Kulbir Handa, to further probe the case.
During the course of investigation, he said, two suspects, identified as Shafadu from West Bengal and Vicky from Kanji House, Hari Market, Jammu, were detained for questioning.
During sustained interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime, leading to the recovery of stolen assets worth Rs 68 lakh, said the SSP Jammu.
“Shafadu was a history-sheeter and was earlier booked in two other FIRs registered at Police Station City and Police Station Peer Mitha,” added the SSP Jammu.
“The police are intensifying efforts to delve into the backward and forward linkages of the case, anticipating more arrests and seizures in the case,” he said.
