Avoid ‘political’ lectures, talks must be vetted, IIT-Bombay tells students & faculty

IIT-Bombay has introduced new guidelines to restrict students and faculty from organising talks and seminars that may be political in nature. The guidelines require permission from a review committee to invite external speakers for political talks and police permission for protest gatherings on campus. The move comes after a PhD student complained about a guest lecture on the Palestine situation, which led to protests and threats against the professor. The institute’s decision has drawn criticism from students, who called the guidelines a “new set of gag rules”.
