Nearly one lakh British Sikhs, who could have selected ‘British Indian’ as ethnicity, chose Sikh as their ‘ethnicity’ in the recent census. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) published data on people who identified as Sikhs in the 2021 census in England and Wales. The census shows an increase of 22% in the number of Sikhs compared to the 2011 census, totaling 5,25,865 Sikhs. Respondents were given the option to choose ‘Indian’ or ‘Pakistani’ as their ethnic group, but nearly one hundred thousand Sikhs protested by writing in ‘Sikh’.
