The politically influential Maratha caste and the more populous Other Backward Class (OBC) in Maharashtra are facing deepening social tensions over the quota issue. Marathas, comprising roughly 30% of the state’s population, are demanding a quota, while OBCs, accounting for around 52% of the population, oppose Marathas encroaching on their existing quota.
