The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which was introduced in India in 2020, emphasizes the importance of counselling in schools as a crucial aspect of the overall educational framework. Psychosocial Counselling is meant to recognise student achievement, modify student’s maladaptive behaviour improve attendance, and assist kids in their mental and emotional growth, as well as promote their engagement in school activities. Attention to mental health and psychosocial support of students can not only ensure emotional well being but also solve many contemporary psychosocial issues. NEP 2020 also recognizes the importance of career counselling in schools as a crucial component of preparing students for their future endeavours. SARTHAQ a document containing implementation plan of NEP 2020 mentions at least role of counsellors in schools at least 25 times.

It is mentioned in the new education policy that physical health check-ups as well as health cards will be maintained for every student, it is also mentioned that mental health check-ups will also be conducted. Counseling services in schools are envisioned to provide support to students who may be facing emotional, psychological, or behavioural challenges.
Early Identification and Intervention: The NEP 2020 highlights the importance of early identification and intervention for students who may be experiencing difficulties related to their mental health or emotional well-being.
