Hidden Gems of Doda- Exploring the Untouched Natural Beauty

In mid-June, as temperatures soar and heat waves blanket the region, suitcases emerge from dusty storages and eager hands start packing them with mufflers and mittens. It is during June’s hot weather that holiday destinations promise us all a calm respite from the sweltering heat.A small town located by the river Chenab, Doda in Jammu and Kashmir remains a hidden gem with its scenic views, freshwater lakes and spiritual sites which hold deep religious significance in the hearts of devotees and pilgrims.

The mountainous region of Doda is also renowned for its craftsmanship, including handmade woolen blankets, shawls, and Gaba, reflecting the prowess of its artisans. Additionally, the intricate Bina work using wheat and paddy grass stands out as a celebrated craft in the area. Moreover, the centuries-old tradition of Bakerwals’ silver jewelry, crafted by local artisans, captivates both outsiders and tourists alike.

Nestled in the district of Doda, Bhaderwah is often referred to as ‘little Kashmir,’ a title it truly deserves. This picturesque tehsil captivates visitors with its green valleys, dense Deodar forests, and expansive meadows similar to Kashmir itself. Bhaderwah’s serene landscapes offer a perfect retreat, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in nature’s arms and discover the charm of this region.

The town is also popular for trekking as it lies in the foothills of the mountain range of Himalayas and for the 600-year-old festival, Mela Pat which is a three days festival held annually on Nag Panchami, symbolizing Nag Culture at Khakhal (village in Bhaderwah). Almost half an hour drive from Bhaderwah- the Chinta Valley is a crowned summer destination, surrounded by Black Forests and captivating greenery. The place is calm, and perfect for a quiet laidback picnic.

At an altitude of 3000 meters- the Padri Pass is adorned by Para Gliders in summers and Skiers in winters. Situated on Bhaderwah- Chamba national highway, it links Jammu to Himachal’s Chamba Valley.  Another Trekking destination is the Seoj Meadow, which is the checkpoint of the famous Kailash Kund Trek. This vibrant meadow is amongst the echoes of nature and assures any traveler peace and tranquility. The Vasuki Nag temple acts as a starting point of Kailash Kund trek. It is the shrine of a popular deity of Bhaderwah- Vasuki Nag.

Nalthi has gained prominence as a junction with the completion of the Bhadarwah-Bani-Basholi road. In addition to its dense deodar forests, the area has lush green grasslands adorned with vibrant flowering plants of various hues. It serves as a serene resting point for trekkers journeying from Sarthal (Bani) and Bhadarwah.

The most pleasant time to visit Doda would be in months from May to November due to its pleasant climate. The roads to Doda are well connected from Jammu (crossing the Patnitop region) and can also be reached via Chamba Valley. Doda has a variety of Home stays, Resorts and Hotels which are also pocket friendly. Overall, Doda remains a natural beauty for those looking for calm and quiet and also for enthusiasts of adrenaline-inducing activities who wish to spend their summer trekking, camping and biking.
