Srinagar registers highest July temp in 25 yrs, Kokernag breaks all records

MeT predicts rain from July 4 to 7 in J&K

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, July 3: While MeT office predicted rain from July 4 to 7 in most places of Jammu region, Srinagar today recorded its hottest July day as the mercury soared to 35.6 °C, 25-year-old high for the city while the tourist resort of Kokernag experienced the highest ever recorded temperature.

Director Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that Kokernag recorded 33.3°C which was the highest ever recorded temperature during the month of July for the tourist resort.
“Today’s maximum temperature in Kokernag surpassed the previous highest of 33.0°C recorded on July 8, 1993,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar further said Srinagar recorded a maximum of 35.6°C and it was the highest since July 9, 1999 for the city when mercury scorched to 37°C. Srinagar has recorded its highest ever July day temperature on 15th day in 1973 when mercury touched 39.5°C.
Qazigund recorded the second highest ever July day, with a maximum of 34.4°C, a few notches below the highest ever recorded for the area on July 11, 1988 when mercury reached 34.5°C.
At 25.7°C, Gulmarg also recorded the warmest July day in at least a decade. Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 30.2°C and Kupwara 34.5°C.
The winter capital of Jammu today recorded day temperature nearly equal to that of Srinagar today at 36.6 degree Celsius. The night temperature, in Jammu, however, remained 29.7 deg C.
Holy township of Katra Mata Vaishnodevi today recorded a day temperature of 31.5 deg C while tourist resort Bhaderwah a maximum temperature of 35.6 deg C which is equal to the temperature of Srinagar on Wednesday.
Highway town of Banihal today recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6 deg C while Batote town a day temperature of 29.8 degree Celsius. Muzaffarabad in PoJK recorded a highest day temperature of 41.0 deg C today, followed by 39.3 deg C temperature in Mirpur in the region.
Rajouri recorded a maximum temperature of 33.6 deg C, Poonch City 36.7 degrees, Kishtwar 35.1, Kathua 37.2 while Udhampur registered 34.8 degree C temperature today.
Leh township in the Union Territory of Ladakh today recorded a day temperature of 30.7 deg C and 13.0 degree night temperature, while Kargil a day temperature of 32.4 deg C on Wednesday.
The weatherman said that there was a possibility of intermittent spell of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places with isolated heavy rain over Jammu Division on July 4. Kashmir valley may receive showers towards late afternoon.
On July 5-6, he said, there is possibility of intermittent moderate rainfall at most places of J&K with heavy showers at a few places.
On July 7, the MeT said, intermittent spell of light to moderate rain/thundershower was expected at many places with isolated heavy Rain over Jammu Division.
On July 8-10, the weather department said hot and humid weather is expected with possibility of spell of rain/thundershower at scattered places of Jammu Division towards late night, early morning. “Spell of rain/thundershower are expected at a few places of Kashmir Division,” it said.
“Flash floods, landslides/mudslides & shooting stones are expected at few vulnerable places during July 4-6,” it said, adding, “There is possibility of water-logging in low lying areas”.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of a heat wave with day temperatures at various places soaring to record-high, even as some respite is likely ahead this week, a MeT official said.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday at most places in the valley was around five to six degrees above the normal, the official said.
Srinagar city’s maximum temperature was six degrees above the normal for this time of the year, he said.
The officials said the frontier Kupwara town, in north Kashmir, also registered a maximum of 34.5 degrees Celsius today, while Qazigund 34.4 degrees Celsius.
The Valley has been experiencing rising temperatures and scorching heat over the past few weeks, leading to water shortage in many areas.
The Health Department has come with advisories to deal with the heatwave conditions. The School Education Department has already announced a 10-day summer vacation for the schools in the Valley from July 8.
The scorching heat has resulted in people staying indoors, and has led to an increase in the sales of cooling gadgets like air conditioners, fans and coolers.
Commuters are also facing difficulties in travelling especially in the city traffic and many are making a beeline to car AC service providers to ensure smooth functioning of the car cooling systems.
