JAMMU, July 26: Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association Akhnoor today conducted its monthly meeting and projected various demands of the retired soldiers.
As per a statement, the meeting began with a two minutes silence under the chairmanship of Navy veteran Lakhbir Singh, to pay homage to the Kargil War heroes on Kargil Vijay Diwas and also to those army personnel who attained martyrdom in different encounters.
During the meeting, it said, various issues concerning ex-servicemen, Veer Naaris, and widows were discussed threadbare in the meeting.
While addressing the meeting, the Chairman of the Association, Lakhbir Singh expressed deep concern on sudden spike in terrorist incidents in Jammu province. He asked all the veterans to be alert in their areas besides asking the volunteers for performing the duties of village guard in their respective areas as and when needed.
Among the main concerns highlighted by the ex-servicemen were socio-economic issues, poor infrastructure and drinking water scarcity in Kandi areas, unscheduled long power cuts in extreme weather, inflated electricity bills, non-implementation of flood control measures in rural areas where agricultural land is being washed away by floods.
Lakhbir Singh also apprised the SDM of Water Supply Scheme Kaink Jagir (Tanda Sohal) which was started in 2014 and later sanctioned in 2018 under the Languishing Projects with a total cost of Rs 7.15 crores but yet to made operational. He also demanded timely redressal of the OROP issue.
Later, a delegation of the ex-servicemen led by Lakhbir Singh called on SDM Akhnoor and apprised him about their problems besides requesting him to ask the higher ups to facilitate the cases of Sadhbhawna Projects stated by the Army in the area.
The SDM Akhnoor passed on-the-spot orders to all the concerned departments to address the grievances of the delegation on priority basis.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Capt Bodh Raj, Santosh Sharma, Dev Raj, Kaka Ram, Raghbir Singh, Jagdev Singh, and Om Parkash.
