JAMMU, July 26: Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority collaborated with District Legal Services Authority Jammu and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu to organize an enlightening session on “Duties of a Citizen Under the Constitution of India” at IIM Jammu today.
Upon arrival at IIM Jammu, Chief Guest Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chief Justice (Acting) of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, was received by Prof BS Sahay, Director of IIM Jammu, along with MK Sharma, Principal Secretary, and Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary of J&K Legal Services Authority.
Prof Sahay welcomed the guests with a bouquet, highlighting the institute’s commitment to excellence.
“Despite being a new campus, IIM Jammu has quickly made its mark, expanding from 47 to 1,000 students and ranking 15th among all IIMs in India,” Prof Sahay noted in his address.
He emphasized the importance of balancing rights and duties as citizens of India.
Prof Sahay affirmed that IIM Jammu is committed to upholding the Constitution, adhering to the laws and policies of the country, and striving for excellence in endeavours.
The visit included a tour of IIM Jammu’s facilities, including the “Nalanda” library and advanced classrooms.
Justice Rabstan appreciated the infrastructure, stating, “The state-of-the-art library and smart classrooms are remarkable and reflect a commitment to holistic education.”
Justice Rabstan also participated in a sapling plantation ceremony, symbolizing environmental sustainability.
He emphasized the significance of the Constitution, urging students to “spend five minutes reading the preamble to understand their duties.”
He also highlighted Article 51A, stressing that “respecting national property and understanding one’s duties are essential for societal progress.”
He emphasized the relevance of the topic, stating that people often forget their duties toward the nation.
“Citizens should respect everyone with fairness and without discrimination,” noted Justice Rabstan.
Prof Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, outlined IIM Jammu’s mission to develop responsible citizens.
“Our focus on socio-economic development, knowledge dissemination, and holistic growth is central to our mission,” he said.
He also noted that the institute now has 1,034 students, reflecting its rapid growth and popularity.
Mandeep Reen, Advocate (Panel Lawyers) at HCLSC, addressed the importance of safeguarding public property and avoiding violence.
“Collective responsibility and legal awareness are crucial for addressing societal issues like drug abuse and inequality,” she stated.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing students and faculty to engage directly with Justice Rabstan.
Smriti Sharma, Secretary, DLSA Jammu, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all participants.
