Yet another book titled ‘Duggar Ke Hindi Lekhak’ by eminent writer, historian and Padma Shri Awardee,Prof.Shiv Nirmohi stands published. Though an octogenarian,Prof Nirmohi is full of energy with undying passion for writing as strong as ever.Through this book,he has endeavoured to describe Hindi writers from Duggar,along with their life and works.Divided into eight chapters,the first chapter of the book under review deals with the poets who wrote in Braj Bhasha.According to the writer,it was in the second half of the 16 th century that some poets from Duggar started composing poems in Braj Bhasha, due to the impact of Krishna Bhakti. The first poet from Duggar to compose poems in Hindi was Paras Ram (1612-1692).He was followed by other poets such as Jagan Nath Chander,Dattu,Bhasha Dass,Vidya Nidhi,Shiv Ram,Trilochan,Harish Chander,Mihir Singh,Ram Dev,Ram Dhan,Neel Kanth, Shannu Lal,Ganda Singh,Thakur Mehar Singh and Pandit Seit Ram Shastri who all wrote in Braj Bhasha which wielded a strong influence in Duggar prior to the rule of Maharaja Ranbir Singh ( 1856-1885).During the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh,the use of Khari Boli ( modern Hindi) gained popularity and momentum which continues till now.
The second chapter of the book is devoted to the writers of District Jammu.Among the prominent Hindi writers discussed in the book are Pt. Narotam Shastri Gangey,Pt.Har Dutt Shastri,Rama Kant,Ram Nath Shastri,Bansi Lal Suri,Balraj Bhasin,Prof,Shakti Sharma,Shiv Prasad Tripathi, Subhash Bhardwaj,Shanker Sharma Pipasu, Pitambar Parkhi,Smt.Krishna Gupta, Shakuntala Seth,Shanta Bharti etc who launched a movement for Hindi as a result of which many writers used Hindi for expression of their thoughts.In Jammu District,115 writers have, so far, published their works out of whom more than 25 writers have published their books in Hindi.
The second chapter is dedicated to the Hindi writers of District Samba and life and works of Prof.Jaidev Bood,Natha Singh Slathia,T.R. Magotra,Sita Ram Slathia and Dr.Jagdeep Singh Slathia,among others, have been descrbied.The next chapter describes the life and literary output of 34 Hindi writers of Kathua District. Prominent among them are Mansa Ram Chanchal, Dr.Adarsh Malhotra, Dr.Usha Monga, Onkar Padha, Shiv Dobalia, Saroj Bala Saroj etc.The fifth chapter deals with the Hindi writers of District Udhampur,prominent of whom are Dr.Adarsh, Ayodhya Nath Kerni,Om Prakash Vidyarthi,Kusum Antra,Anu Atri etc.In the 6th chapter, outstanding writers from District Reasi who have contributed a lot to Hindi literature find their names.There are 22 writers including Swami Nitya Nand,Shyam Dutt Prag,Som Dutt Sugam,Shiv Nirmohi,Sonika Sharma etc.whose life and works have been discussed.The penultimate chapter includes the life and works of 28 writers of Kishtwar,Doda and Ramban.Prominent among them are Kewal Krishan Sharma, Krishna Mehta, Naurattan Nautiyal, Madhur Padri, Shama Bhalesi, etc. The concluding chapter is devoted to the writers of twin Districts of Rajouri and Poonch.Around 22 writers find their names in this chapter and prominent among them include Om Prakash Soodan,Sardar Deedar Singh,Dr.Gaurav Sharma,Master Ved Prakash.The book also contains two useful appendices-Appendix one describes the list of the Hindi newspapers and magazines published from Duggar region while Appendix 2 contains the names of organisations working for the promotion of Hindi literature across Duggar.The book is handy, nicely printed and moderately priced. It is recommended for all those who are interested in Hindi literature or engaged in carrying out research in the said field.The writer deserves a big applause for adding one more book to highlight the contribution of Dogras in literature.
