The college, approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Ministry of Ayush at the request of Dr Jitendra Singh, will enrol its inaugural class of 63 students.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, announced the news on X, underscoring the institution’s importance for the region.
“Heartening news for Kathua and for Jammu and Kashmir in general. The Homeopathy College, sanctioned at our request by PM Narendra Modi through the Ministry of Ayush, the land site of which was visited on 10th March 2024, has been granted approval to start its first batch with 63 students,” Dr Singh wrote.
He expressed hope that the college would set the stage for an era of holistic healthcare by integrating alternative and conventional medicine.
During a visit to the project site back on March 10, 2024, Dr Jitendra Singh shared plans for North India’s first Government-funded Homeopathy facility, which has been developed in the Jasrota area of Kathua district with Central funding of Rs 80 crore.
He emphasized that the project, a testament to the Government’s commitment to alternative healthcare, aimed at providing affordable treatment options while opening doors for local students to pursue homeopathic medical education.
“Covering 8 acres with an additional three acres reserved for future expansion, the college will feature a hospital complex, an academic building, an administrative block, and separate hostels for male and female students,” claimed Dr Jitendra Singh.
He described the college as a future academic hub for homeopathy in North India-a field that has so far lacked extensive educational infrastructure in the region.
“The institution will also provide affordable healthcare to the community, aligning with the Government’s aim of expanding medical access to underserved areas,” noted Dr Jitendra Singh.
“This institution will not only open new avenues for medical aspirants but will also be a step forward in achieving the goal of holistic healthcare,” he remarked, highlighting the positive impact this new facility will have for both students and patients.
Meanwhile, following the Ayush Ministry’s approval, the Principal of Government Homeopathic College, Kathua, has formally reached out to the Chairman of the Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) in Jammu, notifying that the Letter of Permission (LoP) has been granted by the National Commission for Homeopathy under the Ministry of Ayush.
In his letter addressed to Chairman BOPEE, the Principal has claimed that this permission allowed the Government Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Kathua, to admit 63 students in the UG (BHMS) course for the 2024-25 academic session, including seats reserved under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category.
He said that the directive of the Ayush Ministry has also specified that 15% of the UG seats will be treated as All India Quota, with the remaining 85% to be allocated through State-level counselling.
The Principal further claimed in his letter that he has requested the Administrative Department of Health and Medical Education to authorize BOPEE chairman to include the new Government Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Kathua, with its 63 seats in the upcoming Ayush NEET UG (BHMS) counselling schedule for the current academic session.
“In view of this, it is therefore requested to kindly include Government Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital Kathua, Jammu, J&K, in your NEET-UT/AYUSH (BHMS) counselling scheduled for offering BHMS course, which is set to be started from the current academic session 2024-25,” the Principal, Government Homeopathic College, Kathua wrote to Chairman BOPEE.
