JAMMU, Dec 15: Amidst heated debate over illegal settlement of Rohingyas in Jammu and Kashmir mainly the Jammu region with a view to change demographic culture and potential security threats, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today charged the West Bengal and Jharkhand Governments with facilitating infiltration of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis from their borders with “political motives.”
“We have fenced 96 percent border with Bangladesh (from where Rohingyas infiltrate into India and then fan out in different States/Union Territories including Jammu and Kashmir). Only four percent border can’t be fenced as it has rivers, Nallahs, large ponds, dense forests and mountains,” Shah told a national Hindi news channel.
He said the infiltration (of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas) has stopped in Assam and it will end in Odisha. But it hasn’t stopped in West Bengal and Jharkhand as the Governments there treat these immigrants as vote bank.
Assam is ruled by the BJP while the party came to power in Odisha in June this year. However, West Bengal and Jharkhand States are ruled by Trinamool Congress and JMM-led alliance respectively, both the Opposition parties.
“The Home Ministry had identified villages from where the infiltration is taking place and asked that Police Stations, Patwaris and Collectors there should be sensitized and enquire when the people approach for making ration, Aadhaar and voter cards,” the Home Minister said.
“Isn’t it their responsibility to check infiltration? Isn’t it their country, their State? What the officers of these States do? They say Hindus shouldn’t come. CAA will not be implemented but they allow illegal immigrants to infiltrate,” he added.
The issue of illegal settlement of Rohingyas in the Jammu region has sparked heated debate here with police authorities directing for cutting off power and water supplies to the plots occupied by the Rohingyas and lodging First Information Reports (FIRs) against those who had sublet their premises to the illegal immigrants.
The Myanmarese first infiltrate into Bangladesh without any check and then enter India from the borders of different States. Bangladeshis and Myanmarese then sneak into different States/UTs with the help of touts and settle there.
Police and security agencies feel that the Rohingyas could become potential security threat as they were not only confined to Jammu peripheries but have also fanned out in some other districts with girls solemnizing marriages with local boys to mix up with a view of long term stay.
Names of four Kashmir-based NGOs have figured in helping Rohingyas here with both cash and kind.
Authorities have also detected that 61 Aadhaar cards have been issued to Rohingyas in the Jammu region and 97 in the Kashmir division while eight Rohingyas have also managed to get ration cards in their favour.
“Reports of Rohingya girls being illegal trafficked from Myanmar into Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of marrying them with locals in lieu of money have also been received,” the officials said.
Pointing out that the Rohingyas are being used as labourers at lesser wages than locals and are working in vital installations such as Railway Station Jammu, the officials said their presence at sensitive areas can become a security risk. However, security agencies are keeping strict surveillance over the Rohingyas.
As reported exclusively by the Excelsior, police have launched major crackdown on Rohingyas in different parts of the City and lodged a number of First Information Reports (FIRs) against all those who have rented out their property to Myanmarese without tenant verification which has been made mandatory.
