The agitating lawyers, led by Advocate Rohit Sharma, president YLA Jammu, claimed that an inebriated traffic cop posted at High Court Chowk misbehaved with Advocate Sharma when he was out to drop off a female lawyer.
The protest began this afternoon, with lawyers demanding strict action against the erring cop.
By evening, president of the J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu Advocate Nirmal Kotwal, General Secretary Pardeep Majotra, and other lawyers also joined the agitating lawyers.
Terming the alleged misbehaviour with the advocate as unfortunate, Advocate Nirmal Kotwal said that the traffic cop under the influence of alcohol captured a video of their colleague in an objectionable manner.
He demanded that the erring cop be placed under suspension and the SSP Traffic tenders an apology.
Advocates Pardeep Majotra and Rohit Sharma emphasized that the incident (alleged misbehaviour) highlighted the broader concerns about respect and dignity for legal professionals as well as the general public.
They too demanded that the erring traffic police cop be suspended without any delay.
After the persistent protest and blockage of the Janipur road caused massive inconvenience to the general public across the district, particularly to the commuters from either sides of the High Court Chowk upto Amphalla and Akhnoor areas till evening, Traffic authorities ordered the suspension of the erring cop and an enquiry was also ordered against him.
“Keeping in view of the allegations levelled aginst ASI Kamal Kumar Sharma, SO (T) High Court turning is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect,” reads an order issued by the SSP Traffic City Jammu.
The order said that the suspended cop is entitled to draw subsistence allowances as admissible under rules from time to time. Further, he has been directed to report at TPL Jammu and deposit his uniform articles in TPL store with immediate effect.
“A formal enquiry is also ordered against the cop, and entrusted to ASP (T) City Jammu, who will conclude the investigation on its merits and submit the findings along with alleged documents to SSP Traffic office within a fortnight for further course of action,” the order further said.
After the suspension of the erring cop, senior police officials, including SP North Vivek Shekhar and SHO Janipur Inspector Pawan Kumar, who were already stationed at the High Court Chowk, convinced the protestors to call off their protest and lift the roadblock.
