JAMMU, Dec 20: Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) today intensified inspection of vehicles across Jammu district, focusing on adherence to traffic rules, verification of documents and promoting responsible vehicle usage.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu, Pankaj Bhagotra, on the directions of Vishesh Paul Mahajan, Transport Commissioner J&K.
During the drive, as many as 125 vehicles were inspected out of which 49 were challaned and 5 vehicles were seized for serious violations. Approximately, a fine of Rs 1,33,500 was realized from the spot. The main focus of the drive remained vehicles plying with expired fitness (unfit vehicles), R/Permit violations, plying 2-wheelers without wearing helmet, overloading (P&G) etc.
Issuing a stern warning to all vehicle owners and drivers for strict adherence to traffic norms, Pankaj Bhagotra stated that violations, including reckless driving, underage driving and non-compliance to traffic rules, will lead to stringent actions such as seizure of vehicles, suspension of registration certificates and cancellation of driving licenses.
Speaking on the importance of responsible driving, RTO Jammu emphasized that parents can play a critical role in curbing underage driving. He urged people to take responsibility in preventing and playing their part in curbing underage, overloaded and overspeeding driving habits. He said that civic sense and responsible driving habits should start at home. “Sensible and responsible driving must stem from a collective civic responsibility, not solely from enforcement,” the RTO stated.
Highlighting the dangers of negligent and illegal driving, the RTO Jammu said, “We have several instances to quote wherein negligence of a fraction of seconds has claimed several precious lives including our love ones also”. He said the aim of such drives is to reduce road accidents and instill a culture of civic responsibility among road users.
