J&K’s Leap in LEADS Rankings

Jammu and Kashmir’s inclusion in the “fast movers” category in the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) 2024 rankings marks a significant milestone in the Union Territory’s economic trajectory. Released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, this report underscores the progress J&K has made in enhancing its logistics infrastructure and services, key determinants for economic growth and export competitiveness. The LEADS index evaluates states and Union Territories on four critical pillars: Logistics Infrastructure, Logistics Services, Operating and Regulatory Environment, and Sustainable Logistics. J&K’s commendable performance reflects the Union Territory’s ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure and create a business-friendly regulatory environment. These developments are essential for integrating the region’s economy into national and global markets, a challenge it has historically faced due to its unique geographical and political circumstances.
J&K’s rise as a “fast mover” is a testament to the region’s commitment to harnessing its potential and overcoming logistical bottlenecks. By improving road connectivity, enhancing warehousing facilities, and fostering digital adoption in logistics, the Union Territory is paving the way for a more efficient supply chain ecosystem. Such advancements are expected to not only boost trade and exports but also attract investments, create jobs, and drive inclusive growth. Efficient logistics are the backbone of a competitive economy, ensuring timely delivery of goods, reducing costs, and improving overall productivity. As other states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra continue to set benchmarks in logistics excellence by being ranked among “achievers,” J&K’s progress highlights the importance of tailored strategies to address regional challenges and leverage local strengths. J&K’s recognition as a “fast mover” is not just a validation of past efforts but a call to action for further improvement. To sustain and build on this momentum, the Government must prioritise investments in multimodal transport, encourage private sector participation, and integrate sustainability into logistics planning. A lot depends on further planning. By fostering collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors and focusing on innovation, J&K can position itself as a model for inclusive and sustainable growth.
