JAMMU, Jan 12: Observing that the religion based politics is against the idea of India, National Conference leader and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today recalled the conscious and sagacious decision of the people of Jammu and Kashmir aligning with Mahatma Gandhi’s secular India by rejecting the two nation theory during the partition in 1947.
Addressing a convention at Gharota in Nagrota Assembly Constituency, organised by District president Jammu Rural-A Raghubir Singh Manhas and Joginder Singh (Kaku), Sadhotra said that his party remains committed to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a secular India.
“National Conference has always stood for unity, harmony, and safeguarding the rights of all communities”, Sadhotra said and referred to the legacy of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, saying that in 1947, when communal violence engulfed the subcontinent, the towering leader of the time stood like a rock to protect the minorities in Jammu and Kashmir. His leadership and vision ensured the safety and dignity of all communities, showcasing the essence of pluralism and harmony that the National Conference represents, he added.
Sadhotra lambasted the attempts to tag the National Conference with any specific religion or region, calling such efforts a disservice to the rich pluralistic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that the party has always represented the collective aspirations of all communities, transcending religious and regional divides.
Addressing the convention, Arjun Singh Raju MLA Ramban expressed serious concern over the growing trend of intolerance. He criticised the BJP for sowing the seeds of mistrust among communities for realising its political agenda.
Others who addressed the convention included Mohd Ayoub Malik Provincial secretary, Chander Mohan Sharma District president, Raghubir Singh Manhas District president Jammu Rural-A, Ram Parshotam District president Udhampur, all the Block presidents of all the Assembly Constituencies of Jammu district, Ch Mohd Aslam, Ch Razak, Ranjit Singh Manhas and Ch Rehmat Ex-Chairman BDC.
