JAMMU, Jan 13: A delegation of J&K Feature Film Producers Directors Association (JKFFPDA) here today called on Dr Farooq Abdullah and submitted him a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, seeking his intervention to promote regional film industry of J&K.
The delegation was led by Association president, Jayesh Gupta who emphasized the urgent need for Government support to revive and sustain regional cinema.
In memorandum, the Association pointed out that artists of J&K were struggling due to lack of work opportunities, with Doordarshan Jammu and Srinagar no longer producing significant projects.
It stated that while local film producers are willing to create content and provide employment, the lack of adequate government assistance remains a major hurdle.
The Association requested a revision of the existing financial subsidy for films as currently, a 15 per cent subsidy is offered but the Association proposed it to be made 40 per cent, after film’s theatrical release.
Additionally, they urged the government to lower the minimum budget requirement for subsidy eligibility from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 25-30 lakh to benefit smaller local productions.
JKFFPDA called for a government policy mandating cinema halls to allocate at least two shows per day for locally made films on each screen.
The Association proposed that all locally produced films, irrespective of their language, be declared tax-free in J&K to boost the regional film industry and encourage more filmmakers to invest in local projects.
The Association urged CM Omar Abdullah to address their concerns, stating that Government intervention could provide a much-needed identity to J&K cinema and revive its regional film industry.
