Srinagar, Jan 19: From being an engineer to becoming one of the top sand artists in Kashmir, 28-year-old Sahil Manzoor from the Safakadal neighborhood in the old city is creating magic with grains through a unique fusion of traditional and modern elements.
Inspired by his mother’s intricate tapestry designs and his father’s woodworking skills, Sahil’s artistic journey is a tale of resilience and innovation.
Sahil’s transition into art was serendipitous. Like countless others, he lost his engineering job during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he describes this phase as a “blessing in disguise,” providing him the opportunity to learn and refine his craft.
“At the time, I was working as an engineer outside Kashmir, earning a stable income. It was then that I decided to turn my passion for art into a profession,” he said.
His fascination with sand art began in 2010 when he came across online videos of the craft. “I spent hours watching those videos, completely mesmerized by the beauty of sand art,” he recalled. Over the years, he patiently practiced and honed his skills, mastering the ability to create intricate designs with grains of sand.
Having learned sketching and painting during his school days, Sahil found a new medium of expression in sand. “Sand grains gave me a way to channel my emotions and put my feelings onto the canvas,” he says.
Sahil’s innovative efforts to promote Kashmiri culture and tourism through his art have earned him widespread recognition, including accolades from Bollywood and local administration. “Using my art to showcase the beauty of Kashmir was an incredible experience. It felt like giving back to the place that shaped me,” he said.
Despite challenges, Sahil remains content with his journey. “From my engineering career to my IAS attempt, every step has strengthened me. My family’s pride and support have been my rock,” he added.
Now a prominent figure in the art world, Sahil aspires to mentor and nurture young artists. “Sand art is ‘poetry in motion,’ a medium through which I express emotions and tell stories,” he said. He also views art as a potential solution to unemployment in the Valley, encouraging youth to innovate while preserving traditional Kashmiri art.
