SMC seeks more landfill sites

Srinagar, Jan 24: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today said that it is actively seeking additional landfill sites to meet the waste management needs of Srinagar city, apart from its existing Achan landfill.
Speaking with reporters, SMC Commissioner Dr. Owais Ahmad stated that the corporation is engaging with neighboring districts to identify a few additional sites while also exploring options within Srinagar.
“We are exploring a few potential locations for this purpose. However, Achan is currently sufficient to meet the waste management needs of Srinagar city,” he said.
Regarding waste management measures at Achan, the Commissioner highlighted that the bioremediation process has been initiated and has also received cabinet approval.
“We had initially planned to set up a waste-to-energy plant at Achan under the PPP mode, but that did not materialize as expected. Now, we have started the bioremediation process,” he explained.
Dr. Owais further elaborated that under the bioremediation process, waste will be treated and disposed of scientifically.
“The project was tendered and has now received cabinet approval. This initiative will ensure scientific treatment of waste and facilitate the reclamation of the land,” the Commissioner added.
