“Broad-day light murders and robberies in Jammu city have shocked everyone and we have assembled here to lodge our protest against failure of the system,” he said and added that they were also going to meet Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to apprise them of the situation.
Slamming Police for its failure to keep a check on criminal activities, the former Mayor alleged that instead of maintaining a vigil on criminals and their suspicious activities, harassment of common people in the name of naka checking was a routine phenomenon.
“Even as our Police Department is capable enough to eradicate the crime and criminals as it has successfully fought against terrorism, it is unfortunate that same blue eyed officers are repeated on significant positions and Police Stations for the reasons best known to the authorities at the helm of affairs,” he said.
Claiming that land grabbing, smuggling of drugs and illegal mining were main reasons behind increased criminal activities in Jammu, the former Mayor demanded issuance of white paper on Government land, particularly adjoining Vijaypur, Supwal, Bari Brahmana, Balole Nallah, Ring Road etc. He alleged that the Revenue Department officials were hand in glove with the land grabbers in encroaching upon the Government land, which is resulting into violent incidents.
Stressing the need for out of box solution to control the criminal activities in Jammu, the former Mayor suggested the use of latest technology and Artificial Intelligence for keeping a vigil round the clock. “We had established command and control system when I was Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation. Such a system should be used to maintain a close vigil and keep check on unwanted activities across Jammu,” he added.
Rajinder Sharma was accompanied by former Corporators Ashok Singh Manhas, Sunita Gupta, Anil Kumar, Tripta Devi, Gurmeet Kour and others.
