Sir,
Apropos editorial ‘Ambitious Space Expansion’ dated 21 January. It is encouraging that India has achieved many milestones in the space exploration since the launching of the first satellite in 1975. But during the last decade India has achieved fast and significant progress in space exploration. Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) was launched in 2013 which made India the first Asian country to reach Mars orbit in 2014. Chandrayaan-3 was launched in 2023 and India became the first country to land a spacecraft on the moon’s south pole. The first solar probe Aditya L-1 was also launched in September 2023. Space Docking experiment was performed successfully on 15 the instant which is the process of joining two satellites in the Space and India became the fourth country to do so. The future planning of ISRO is to establish it’s own Space station by 2035 and also the first manned mission for moon to be launched by 2040. The approval of the construction of third launch pad in Sriharikota by the government at the projected cost of 3985 crore will prove a big leap in the infrastructure field for space exploration. This launch pad will be having a capacity of launching much heavier spacecraft in the low earth orbit . This will further boost the space economy which has presently reached the 8 billion dollar mark. The opening of the private sector for space exploration has further contributed to the space economy. Space sector has assumed a significant place in the present times.
