SRINAGAR, Feb 3: Veterinarians in Kashmir clarified today that concerns over toxoplasmosis, a cat-borne infection linked to miscarriages, were based on a misinterpreted statement, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and proper immunization of pets.
The controversy arose after Dr. Syed Altaf Geelani, Superintendent of the Central Veterinary Hospital Srinagar, was quoted by a Jammu-based outlet last week as saying that toxoplasmosis is a significant cause of miscarriages in Kashmir. The statement, which went viral, sparked panic among pet lovers in the valley.

“A tailored clip extracted from a podcast inadvertently created panic among the public, particularly feline owners. We aimed to clarify misconceptions and provide accurate information regarding pet management in the Valley,” Dr. Geelani said during a press conference.
He stressed the need for greater awareness as pet ownership increases in the region. “Understanding the responsibilities that come with pet ownership is crucial. Ensuring pets are well cared their health and well-being,” he said.
Dr. Geelani highlighted the importance of mandatory deworming and vaccination to prevent zoonotic diseases-those transmitted from animals to humans. He also underscored pet hygiene as a key aspect of responsible pet ownership, urging regular grooming, cleanliness, and veterinary check-ups to safeguard both pet and public health.
The hospital’s Out Patient Dpartment (OPD) treats approximately 50,000 cases annually, but this year, the number has risen dramatically to 450,000. Dr. Geelani noted that NGOs and animal welfare organizations continue to provide support by assisting with sick, distressed, and abandoned animals brought to the hospital.
He also emphasized the “One Health” concept, which recognizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. “By promoting good pet management practices and ensuring necessary medical care, we contribute to a healthier community overall. The One Health approach encourages collaboration among veterinary medicine, public health and Environmental Science to address health challenges comprehensively.
