Omar meets J&K Wushu team, hails their success at National Games

JAMMU, Feb 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with the J&K Wushu team in Jammu today to congratulate them on their extraordinary performance at the 38th National Games held in Uttarakhand. The team made the Union Territory proud by securing second place in the Men’s Sanda event, with an impressive medal haul of two gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
The delegation was led by Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo, who has been instrumental in shaping the careers of many top athletes in the region. Among the athletes present were Gold medalists Surya Bhanu Partap and Mohd Kamraan, as well as Silver medalist Ayeera Chisti, along with other team members who contributed to the success.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his admiration for the team’s hard work and dedication, stating on X, “I met with the incredible Wushu team that represented Jammu & Kashmir at the 38th National Games. Their outstanding performance secured 2nd place in the Men’s Sanda event, earning them an impressive tally—two Gold, one Silver, and four Bronzes. Congratulations to our champions for their remarkable achievement.” His words were a testament to the hard work and spirit shown by the athletes, as they made their mark at the prestigious event.
Speaking to the Excelsior, Kuldeep Handoo shared his excitement about the meeting, “It was wonderful meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He congratulated the team for our tremendous performance at the national games. During the meeting, we raised several important issues related to sports development in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Handoo emphasized the need for increased cash awards for medal winners at national and international competitions, as well as better career opportunities for outstanding athletes. He also urged the CM to support their demand for hosting the National Games in J&K, highlighting the region’s ability to host such large-scale events. “We’ve received a positive response from the Chief Minister on all the issues we raised during the meeting,” Handoo added.
