JAMMU, Feb 6: Reaffirming National Conference’s (NC) commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta stated that Omar Abdullah-led Government will not compromise on the medical sector.
He highlighted the alarming shortage of Medical Officers, Dental Surgeons, Consultants, and Para-medical staff across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, attributing the crisis to the negligence of the previous administration. His remarks follow concerns raised by the J&K and Ladakh High Court over the deteriorating healthcare services, particularly in rural areas.
Interacting with a delegation of Block Committee of Padder, a remote Scheduled Tribe area headed by its Block president Janki Nath, Gupta criticized the previous administration for failing to fill critical vacancies in the health sector. He revealed that Jammu division has 664 vacant Medical Officer posts and 2,489 unfilled Para-medic positions, while Kashmir division faces shortages of 72 Medical Officers and 2,651 Para-medics. These gaps have left rural healthcare institutions severely understaffed, forcing patients to rely on urban hospitals.
Gupta highlighted that many health centres either remain closed or operate with minimal staff and inadequate infrastructure. Despite repeated appeals, the previous administration neglected these issues, exacerbating public suffering. He emphasized that the NC has consistently urged the Lieutenant Governor’s administration to address the crisis, but no concrete action has been taken.
Asserting the party’s commitment to healthcare, Gupta stated that under Omar Abdullah’s leadership, the NC will ensure robust medical services by filling vacant positions and upgrading infrastructure. He reassured the public that NC-led Government would prioritize public health and guarantee accessible and quality medical care for all.
