Thieves strike at Jogi Gate temple, ransack urns

JAMMU, Feb 6: Unidentified thieves struck a temple in Jogi Gate area here and decamped with around Rs 20,000 from the donation boxes installed within the temple premises besides ransacking the urns containing the ashes of the dead individuals.

The incident happened on the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday when the thieves barged into the Cremation Ground, Jogi Gate based temple, and forcibly opened the donation boxes using pickaxes to steal around Rs 20000 from the temple.

The thieves also ransacked the urns containing the ashes of the dead individuals in search of gold and silver coins placed inside them.
The temple management got to know about the theft around 10:30 am when they opened the temple to find the donation boxes vandalized with money missing from them besides urns opened.
According to the temple Sewa Samiti General Secretary, Rakesh Sharma, the incident has been reported to the police.
Sharma slammed the police for their alleged failure to ensure safety to the people of Jammu, particularly the temples, which are often targeted by the thieves.
He said, “Forget money being stolen, the thieves are not even sparing the ashes of the dead individuals. This is shameful for the police.”
A police official from Gujjar Nagar Police Post said that they have put some suspects on the surveillance and the arrests in the case are likely to happen soon.
