Officials told Excelsior that while the overall construction of GMC Handwara-which will eventually be a 500-bed hospital-is still in its initial stages, the nearly completed section requires a few more additions before it becomes operational.
“The overall construction is ongoing, but the GMC Handwara project is still in its early phase. A new hospital is being built, and the 200-bed section is 90 percent complete,” said Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Medical Superintendent of GMC Handwara.
He added that work on the hospital’s lift is currently underway, noting that once operational, it will enable the hospital authorities to make all floors functional.
“We expect the work to be completed in the next few months. We had an issue with a Servo transformer, but that has now been resolved, and it will be available in the next few days,” he said.
Dr. Bhat explained that with the Servo transformer in place, the hospital will have round-the-clock electricity, ensuring better functionality and improved patient care. “This will also allow us to start new sections,” he noted.
Additionally, he provided updates on another ongoing project-a 200-bed teaching hospital.
“Construction is progressing there as well. Due to demolition and new construction, some sections have been affected, but this is just the initial phase. Within the next three to four months, the facility will be functional,” he said.
The Medical Superintendent further mentioned plans to relocate the triage area to the ground floor of the new hospital building to streamline patient care.
“We will be shifting the triage there, which will allow us to establish separate medical and surgical emergency units. This setup will be in place within a week,” he stated.
Officials acknowledged that space constraints in the hospital have caused difficulties for patients. However, they emphasized that patient care has not been compromised.
“We are doing everything possible to manage the situation. There is a shortage of wards and beds, but within the next month, we will be able to accommodate more patients.”
