JAMMU, Feb 10: In an unprecedented feat of adventure and endurance, a highly skilled team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, led by its Director, Col. Ranveer Singh Jamwal has completed the first-ever full-length rafting expedition on the Brahmaputra River. Spanning 1040 kilometers, this pioneering journey began in Gelling village, Arunachal Pradesh, where the river enters India from Tibet and concluded at Hatsingimari, Assam, near the Bangladesh border.
As per reports the expedition, undertaken under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence, took 28 days to complete, including 25 paddling days and 3 days allocated for equipment maintenance. The team navigated the river’s fierce Class 4 and 5 rapids, unpredictable terrain and constantly shifting river dynamics. Some of the most challenging rapids included the Tooth Fairy Rapid, Kodak Rapid, and Hairy Hari Rapid in the Arunachal Pradesh section, where the team endured multiple dangerous flips.
In addition to these physical challenges, the team faced strong currents and vast eddies in the Assam section of the river. Despite these obstacles, they managed to complete the entire stretch, setting a new benchmark for rafting expeditions in India. This discovery also revealed that the Brahmaputra’s length within India is 1040 km, longer than the previously believed 916 km, adding further significance to the accomplishment.
Col. Ranveer Singh Jamwal, an internationally renowned mountaineer and decorated Army officer from Jammu, once again made his region proud with this historic expedition. Reflecting on the journey, he said, “Conceiving such a monumental adventure and turning it into reality was no easy task. Watching this dream unfold into history fills me with immense pride. The entire team’s unwavering courage and determination made this possible.”
During the expedition, the team also engaged in cultural exchanges with local tribes along the river, promoting eco-awareness and adventure tourism, particularly in India’s north-eastern region. This historic rafting expedition cements the reputation of NIMAS as a trailblazer in adventure sports and adventure education, shaping the future of adventure in India.
