SRINAGAR, Feb 10: A mathematician who has been working hard for several years today unveiled a solar-powered car, named ‘Ray.’
The innovator, Mir Bilal, a teacher by profession, said the car is 100% solar-powered and, according to him, the first of its kind in the country’s automobile sector.
“It runs entirely on solar power, and I have been working on it since 2009. Before making further modifications, I showcased it in 2022, and it went viral on social media,” he said.
The car features gullwing doors to enhance its appearance and increase energy generation through solar panels installed on the doors.
“These doors add to the car’s appeal and help in charging the system,” he said.
Bilal said he was motivated to develop a solar-powered vehicle after witnessing rising fuel prices.
“There is a global competition to manufacture solar-powered vehicles, whether in Australia or China. I thought, why not contribute to the Make in India initiative?” he added.
In addition to ensuring the car runs on solar energy, Bilal has also focused on giving it the aesthetics and features of a luxury car.
“The car offers features on par with other luxury vehicles. I have used monocrystalline solar panels, which generate maximum energy even in low sunlight. These panels are more efficient and occupy less surface area,” he explained.
According to him, the solar panels are integrated throughout the car and can expand via remote access.
While he did not disclose whether he has partnered with any automobile manufacturer, Bilal stated that he has set a price of Rs 10 lakh for the car.
