Dr. Pai states, Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy can undergo fertility preservation and seek parenthood once they regain their health. Studies reveal that fertility does get affected in men and women, especially after chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy in women affects their ovaries, causing premature ovarian failure and decreased egg production. Similarly, radiation administered in the pelvic areas damages the ovaries, affecting egg and sperm production, respectively. The extent of damage to fertility depends upon the type and dosage of treatment and the patient’s health parameters.
He recollected a 27-year-old female cancer patient who approached him for fertility preservation before going ahead with chemotherapy for lung cancer. He explained the fertility preservation procedures and also discussed the same with her treating oncologists. Dr Pai and his team performed the egg retrieval procedure and froze her eggs. After completion of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, she approached Dr Pai to resume her attempts to get pregnant. With careful planning and monitoring, they were successful in her assisted IVF procedure, and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
