Court awards 10 yrs RI to narco smuggler

JAMMU, Feb 25: Principal Sessions Judge Samba RN Wattal today awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment to one Prithipal Singh, a narco smuggler, and imposed fine of Rs one lakh.
The narco smuggler was arrested by Vijaypur Police on March 25, 2019 for smuggling large quantity of poppy straw and accordingly case was registered against him for committing offence under NDPS Act.
After hearing Ajay Kumar PP for the UT whereas Advocate Ganesh Sharma for the accused, the court observed, “the accused is involved in sale, purchase and transportation of commercial quantity of contraband (poppy straw) and same has recovered from his vehicle”, adding “the use of drugs is a menace in the society. Any leniency shown to drug peddlers /smugglers may affect the society”.
“The courts are required to be sensitive to societal demands that those who are involved in sale and purchase of drugs do not roam ascot free. They are required to be dealt with iron hands and sentenced accordingly, so that same is deterrent in society and those who indulge in sale and purchase of drugs shall think hundred times before resorting to such trade”, Principal Sessions Judge said.
He further said, “at the same time the court is also required to take note of the accused and his family. The family of convict gets adversely affected. Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case, accused is convicted and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of Rs one lakh is imposed on him”.
