LEH, Feb 27: The Indian men’s Ice Hockey team recently visited the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at the Lt Governor’s Secretariat. This follows their participation in the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, where the unranked team competed against higher-ranked teams, securing a win against Macau in one of their four matches.
The Lieutenant Governor praised the team’s performance and urged them to aim for even greater achievements in future competitions. He emphasized the importance of improving ice hockey management in Ladakh, suggesting the creation of an Ice Hockey Federation affiliated with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). This federation, he noted, should be Ladakh-based and locally managed to ensure the sport’s proper development and the promotion of players from the region.
The Lieutenant Governor also stressed the need to elevate ice hockey standards in Ladakh and encouraged the team to mentor future generations of players. He assured the team that the UT Administration would finalize a Sports Policy, which would include sports quotas in government jobs for eligible sportspersons from Ladakh.
The team, in turn, expressed their gratitude for the support they received to participate in the international event and requested the establishment of sports quotas for local athletes in Government jobs.
