JAMMU, Mar 2: Bhalwal in Jammu witnessed a significant event as part of the nationwide ‘Watershed Yatra’ campaign under the Watershed Development Component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY 2.0). The campaign, commenced on February 5, was aimed to enhance water conservation, promote sustainable land management and empower local communities through effective watershed strategies.
The event was graced by prominent figures, including District Development Council (DDC) Chairman Bharat Bhushan, MLA Jammu North Sham Lal Sharma, several ex-PRI members, Assistant Commissioner Panchayat Jammu Shahzada Noor UI Ain, Block Development Officer Bhalwal Dr Sunil Sharma, and officials from RD&PR, ICDS, NRLM (UMEED) and PDD. A large gathering of local residents from Block Bhalwal also participated.
A highlight of the event was the e-inauguration of various watershed development works focused on improving soil and water conservation practices. Addressing the gathering, Bharat Bhushan emphasized the importance of watershed schemes and urged participants to maximize the benefits of the PMSURVA scheme and Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) [SBM(G)]. He encouraged the construction of soakage pits and compost pits to achieve the mission of a clean India, aligning with the vision of Prime Minister of India. The event concluded with a plantation drive themed “EK Ped Maa Kay Naam” and the flagging off of the Watershed Yatra Vehicle.
Sham Lal Sharma highlighted the Government’s commitment to environmental conservation and rural development. He underscored the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, promoting solar energy adoption to reduce electricity costs and foster renewable energy use. He called on residents to embrace solar power for energy self-sufficiency.
The MLA also urged community-driven efforts for rainwater harvesting, watershed development, and constructing soakage pits to preserve groundwater resources. He also emphasized the role of cleanliness under SBM(G).
The ‘Watershed Yatra,’ which traveled approximately 2,400 km across Jammu and Kashmir, engaged over 500,000 residents through interactive workshops and demonstrations, culminating in Jammu with a focus on advanced watershed conservation techniques.
