UDHAMPUR, Mar 2: Pawan Khajuria, who had contested as an independent candidate from the Udhampur East Assembly constituency, today demanded that the Jammu & Kashmir UT budget should prioritize the development of Udhampur district.
Addressing a press conference, here today, he emphasized the need to restore the sanctity of Devika Mai and urged the Government to allocate funds in the budget to fully restore its sanctity by developing the site as a religious tourism destination, enabling grand events like the Kumbh Mela. This, he said, would not only uphold its religious significance but also benefit the district’s economy.

Pawan Khajuria further advocated for comprehensive development and expansion of Udhampur district. He suggested upgrading the Municipal Council to a Municipal Corporation, converting Municipal Committees into Municipal Councils, and forming new Municipal Committees of smaller villages. He proposed granting tehsil status to several Nayabats.
He also reminded the Central Government of its promise after the abrogation of Article 370 to bring multinational companies to Jammu & Kashmir to address unemployment. He urged the Government to prioritize employment generation by establishing pollution-free industries in the region to provide job opportunities for the youth.
Expressing concern over rising drug addiction among young people due to unemployment, Pawan Khajuria stressed the need for strict action against drug traffickers.
Speaking about healthcare facilities, Khajuria pointed out that while the district hospital was granted the status of a Government Medical College (GMC), it still lacks essential facilities that a Medical College should have. He demanded that the upcoming budget should allocate resources to ensure the hospital gets the necessary infrastructure so that it does not remain just a referral hospital. He also called for PHC Tikri and PHC Panada (Majalta) to be upgraded to Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Accidental Hospitals. He emphasized the importance of having well-equipped medical facilities along the national highway to provide immediate treatment to accident victims.
In the press conference, Pawan Khajuria was accompanied by Vijay Kumar and Vikas.
