Krishna Jayasankar first Indian woman to cross 16m in indoor shot put

ALBUQUERQUE (USA), March 2: India’s Krishna Jayasankar made history at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships 2025, becoming the first Indian woman to breach the 16-metre mark in indoor shot put with a record-breaking throw of 16.03 metres.

The 22-year-old shattered the previous Indian indoor national record of 15.54m set by Poornarao Rane at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2023.

Krishna, the daughter of former Indian basketball players Prasanna and Jayasankar Menon, finished third in the event behind Mya Lesnar (19.02m) and Gabby Morris (17.09m). Mya is the daughter of American professional wrestler Brock Lesnar.

Krishna was in fourth place until the penultimate round but secured a podium finish with her final throw, surpassing Makayla Long. Her previous best indoor throw was 15.03m, recorded at the same venue last month.

India’s overall national record in women’s shot put remains 18.41m, set by Abha Khatua at the Federation Cup 2024.

The automatic qualification mark for the women’s shot put event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2025 in Nanjing, China, is 19.50m. However, athletes can still qualify through the Top Performance Lists, with the final cut-off set for March 12. (UNI)
