JAMMU, Mar 2: In a joint press conference held at the premises of All J&K Megh Sabha, prominent leaders of various Scheduled Caste (SC) organizations addressed concerns arising from a recently circulated bill on social media, which proposed reducing the SC reservation in Jammu and Kashmir from 8% to 4%.
The press conference was led by Narinder Datt (president of All J&K Megh Sabha) and saw the participation of heads of different sabhas, including Parshotam Lal (president, Saryara Sabha), Sham Lal Basson (general secretary, Ravidas Sabha-Bahu Fort), Kali Dass (president, All J&K Mahasa Sabha), Captain Biru Ram (president, Barwala Sabha) and Prithvi Singh (president, Batwal Sabha).
Addressing media persons, Narinder Datt urged the SC community not to panic over the bill, suggesting that it might be a private member’s bill that could or could not be accepted by the concerned party. He reassured the community of protection under the current administration led by Prime Minister. He also expressed confidence in the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, praising their commitment to the development and upliftment of the SC community.
Datt further appealed to the elected SC MLAs to raise their voices in the Assembly for increasing the reservation percentage for SCs from the current 8% to at least 15%, or alternatively, to demand SC reservation as per the Union Territory status. He also highlighted the necessity of implementing rosters for reservations and called upon the LG and the CM to ensure that the rights of the SC community are safeguarded.
The conference was attended by several other leaders and representatives, including Kittin Singh, Rashmi Devi (City president), Premila Devi, Sapna Bhagat, Neelam Bhagat, Satya Devi, Narinder Singh, Amar Nath Bhagat, Rajinder Bhagat (vice president) and others.
