BJP criticizes NC Govt’s handling of education sector in J&K

JAMMU, Mar 3: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Girdhari Lal Raina today expressed dissatisfaction with the National Conference (NC) Government’s handling of the education sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Raina, along with BJP spokespersons Rajni Sethi and Dr Pardeep Mahotra, said that the NC Government has ignored its responsibilities under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which was updated in 2024.
He pointed out that while the NEP was implemented in Jammu and Kashmir in 2022, there has been no mention of significant initiatives like integrating vocational training or promoting interdisciplinary education, as outlined in the policy.
The NEP 2024 emphasizes the development of teaching content in regional languages, specifically Dogri in Jammu and Kashmiri in Kashmir. Raina noted that the government has yet to present a roadmap for the same, despite expectations from the people of the region. He also highlighted the policy’s push for removing traditional divides between Arts, Science, and Commerce streams, allowing students more flexibility in choosing subjects.
Raina also referred to the NEP’s focus on increasing the role of mathematics and computational thinking in schools, particularly to prepare students for emerging fields like artificial intelligence and data science. He stressed the importance of allocating funds for education, including infrastructure, teacher training, and other school necessities.
As the Jammu and Kashmir government prepares to present its budget on March 7, Raina expressed hopes that the budget would address these critical issues and not just repeat the promises of the NC’s 2024 manifesto.
