JAMMU, Mar 3: J&K BJP spokesperson, Advocate Purnima Sharma today called on the Omar Abdullah-led Government to prioritize women-centric issues in the Budget session.
Addressing the media persons here, Purnima Sharma criticized the National Conference (NC) for failing to deliver on promises made to women during the Assembly elections.
Sharma highlighted that the NC had pledged to provide Rs 5,000 per month to female heads of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) households and 12 free LPG cylinders annually to help mitigate the burden of rising prices. She urged the Government to act swiftly on these promises, emphasizing that the Budget session is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to women’s welfare.
The senior BJP leader also reminded the Government of its promise to raise the old age and widow pensions to Rs 3,000 per month. Additionally, Sharma demanded the fulfillment of the promise to offer free public transport for women, describing it as a crucial step to enhance their safety and mobility.
She further pressed for increasing marriage assistance for EWS women from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, as outlined in the NC manifesto, to provide financial relief to struggling families. Highlighting the need for better healthcare support, Sharma called for raising the medical allowance for pensioners and family pensioners from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000 per month without delay.
Purnima also demanded the establishment of senior citizen homes in Jammu and Srinagar with facilities for sports, recreation, reading, and writing, as promised by the NC. She criticized recent changes in qualifications for Anganwadi workers, calling them a step backward, and urged immediate corrective measures to safeguard their interests.
Expressing concern for sanitation workers, Sharma called for comprehensive welfare schemes, including health insurance and safety training. She urged the NC to move beyond rhetoric and take substantial steps for women’s empowerment in J&K.
