Waste to Wonder Park

The upcoming “Waste to Wonder Park” in Jammu is a groundbreaking initiative that promises to redefine both waste management and tourism in the region. Spearheaded by Jammu Smart City Limited, this ambitious project will be developed on a 40-kanal encumbrance-free land in Bhagwati Nagar, following the decision to relocate it from Nagrota due to forest clearance issues. This move underscores the importance of careful planning and sustainable development in urban expansion. What sets this park apart is its unique approach to waste utilisation. Replicas of 14 international, national and local monuments will be created entirely from scrap materials, including iron pipes, machine parts, e-waste, and rubber tyres. Such an initiative also instils environmental consciousness by demonstrating how discarded materials can be transformed into artistic and architectural marvels.
Beyond aesthetics, the park aims to serve as a holistic recreational hub with facilities such as an administrative block, ticketing counter, food courts, an open-air theatre, adventure zones for children and water points. This comprehensive infrastructure will make it an attractive destination for families, tourists, and students, providing both entertainment and educational opportunities. Another commendable aspect is the project’s execution under the Public-Private Partnership model with financial backing through the Viability Gap Fund Scheme. Revenue generated will be shared between the vendor and JSCL, ensuring economic sustainability. Additionally, the park will be built using construction and demolition waste sourced from various locations, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
The transformation of what was once a municipal waste dumping ground into a hub of innovation and leisure exemplifies urban renewal at its best. The project also sets a precedent for sustainable tourism and waste management. As the first of its kind in Jammu and Kashmir, modelled after successful ventures in Lucknow and Delhi, the “Waste to Wonder Park” will significantly enhance the city’s tourist appeal. More importantly, it will serve as a living testament to the power of recycling and responsible urban planning. The authorities must ensure timely execution and proper maintenance so that this visionary project reaches its full potential and becomes a source of pride for Jammu.
