Srinagar, Mar 7: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held a party convention in Chadoora today, followed by a signature campaign seeking a ban on the sale and use of alcohol in J&K.
The event was attended by party leader Iltija Mufti, along with PDP General Secretary Mohammad Khurshid Alam.
Addressing the gathering, Iltija highlighted the detrimental impact of substance abuse on the socio-economic fabric of society.
She emphasized the urgent need for collective action to safeguard future generations from this growing menace.
“The rising tide of alcohol and drug abuse threatens the very foundation of our communities,” she said, stressing that people must unite to protect the youth & ensure a healthier and more prosperous future.
The event was part of the PDP’s ongoing campaign advocating for the prohibition of alcohol, and seeking public support for a proposed bill in the J&K Assembly.
Echoing similar concerns, Mohammad Khurshid Alam urged party members and the broader community to actively participate in the signature campaign.
He underscored the importance of grassroots involvement in compelling legislative action against substance abuse.
“Public welfare is not a privilege but a fundamental right, and it is our solemn duty to hold governance accountable to the people,” he said.
“By coming together and supporting this campaign, we can drive meaningful change, eradicate this scourge from our society, and allow our youth to live a life free from this vicious social evil.”
The convention was also attended by key party figures, including Mohammad Yaseen Bhat (District President Budgam), Abdul Qayoom Bhat, Arif Laigaroo, Dr. Ali Mohammad, Manzoor Ahmad Wani, Sheikh Saba, Mohammad Shafi Kundangar, and Zone President Bashir Ahmad.
Each leader reiterated the urgency of addressing substance abuse and encouraged widespread support for the campaign.
