JAMMU, Mar 10: The Department of Pediatrics at AIIMS Jammu, in collaboration with the IAP National Respiratory Chapter and IAP Jammu, successfully organized an “Asthma Training Module” to enhance awareness and expertise in managing pediatric asthma.
The program gathered renowned pediatric pulmonologists from leading medical institutions across India to share insights on the latest advancements in asthma diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care.
Asthma, the most prevalent chronic respiratory disease in children, affects 3% to 38% of the global population. Despite progress in treatment and adherence to evidence-based guidelines, it remains a significant public health challenge. The training was aimed at equipping pediatricians with updated knowledge and practical skills to improve patient outcomes.
Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Jammu, served as the patron of the event. In his inaugural address, he highlighted AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to academic excellence and emphasized the importance of such training programs in keeping healthcare professionals abreast of evolving treatment modalities to ensure better care for children with asthma.
The event featured expert sessions by prominent specialists, including Dr Neetu Talwar from Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram; Dr Satnam Kour from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi; and Dr Samriti Gupta from AIIMS Jammu. Their lectures covered the latest treatment guidelines, age-specific management strategies, and the importance of parental counseling for better therapy adherence. Special emphasis was placed on dispelling myths about asthma treatment and ensuring correct inhalation techniques among young patients.
Participants also benefited from a hands-on session focusing on the correct use of Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs), Spacers, Dry Powder Inhalers (DPIs), Nebulizers, Peak Flowmetry, and Spirometry-essential tools for effective asthma management.
The event was spearheaded by Dr Samriti Gupta, Associate Professor and Head of Pediatric Medicine at AIIMS Jammu, with support from Dr Sheetal Ganju, Dr Vivek Pandita, Dr Radhika Uppal and Dr Harkirat Kour. Senior pediatricians and IAP representatives, including Dr G S Saini, Dr S K Digra and Dr Ashok K Gupta, also attended.
