MOSCOW, Mar 10 : Europe overtook the Middle East as the largest importer of weapons from the United States from 2020-2024, claiming this title for the first time in two decades, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said on Monday.
“For the first time in two decades, the largest share of US arms exports in 2020 24 went to Europe (35 per cent) rather than the Middle East (33 per cent),” SIPRI said.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia turned to be the largest consumer of US weapons among individual countries, accounting for 12%, SIPRI said.
The US’s share in European military imports increased from 52% in the 2015-2019 period to 64% in the 2020-2024 period, SIPRI said, adding that European military imports more than doubled between the two half-decades against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine.
