SRINAGAR, Mar 10: Government today said that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is implementing decentralized waste management strategies to ease the burden on Achan landfill, aiming to eliminate open dumping at the site by 2027.
Replying to queries raised by MLA Eidgah, Mubarak Gul during the on-going Budget session of the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the Achan dumping site-which holds over 11 lakh MT of legacy waste, spans a total of 914 kanals-of which only 55% has been utilized so far.
“Despite having available land, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is proactively implementing decentralized waste management strategies to reduce the burden on Achan and enhance waste processing efficiency,” he said.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Housing & Urban Development portfolio, said in his reply that the site handles approximately 550 tonnes per day (TPD) of municipal solid waste, serving as the city’s primary waste disposal and processing facility.
Listing initiatives undertaken by the SMC to ease the burden, he said three transfer stations with a total capacity of 367.22 TPD have been approved under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) 2.0, further strengthening decentralized waste handling and reducing direct landfill dependence.
Additionally, a 125 TPD facility is planned for processing construction and demolition waste, aiming to handle such waste efficiently, reduce illegal dumping, and promote material reuse.
The Government further stated that multiple Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and composting units are being outsourced to enhance waste segregation, recycling, and organic waste processing at the local level.
SMC is also implementing bio-mining and sanitary landfilling techniques to remediate old waste dumps, reclaim land, and minimize environmental hazards.
