Reservation is to help marginalised communities, not to divide society: Raina

JAMMU, Mar 16: Girdhari Lal Raina, former MLC and BJP party spokesperson today condemned the opportunistic politics of Kashmir centric parties and said that their party is seriously concerned over consistent efforts by Kashmir centric politicians, who are misleading the people over the issue of reservations.
In a statement issued, the BJP leader said that some politicians are trying to divide Jammu & Kashmir on the basis of region, religion and language.
He said, “I’m pained by the falsehood being spread over reservations. It is a universally recognized and constitutionally accepted concept of affirmative action by the national Governments to help marginalised and underprivileged sections of the society.”
Raina termed allegations of Kashmiri speaking people as nothing more than a figment of imagination.
He asked senior politicians like Sajjad Lone to desist from creating divisions on the basis of language and region.
“Such politics will ruin and destroy Jammu Kashmir,” he said.
Asserting that there was no major change in reservation numbers post 2019, BJP spokesperson said only rationalisation was done lately, for example by reducing RBA quota from 20 per cent to 10 per cent and that was provided to ST2.
He also asked the public to make a distinction between horizontal and vertical reservations.
“Reservations available under sports, defence/police personnel and persons with disabilities and under Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) are not same as that available to SCs, STS and OBCs,” he said and added, “In spite of all this, if there are any issues and grievances, there is a mechanism in democracy to address such grievances. Those platforms and mechanisms must be used to address issues democratically without resorting to divisive politics.”
