Present political system guarantees future and destiny of people: Nepal President Paudel

KATHMANDU, Mar 24: Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel on Monday said that the federal democratic republic system in the country was gained through “great sacrifices” and it is the collective responsibility of the government and political parties to make citizens feel that this system guarantees their future and destiny.
Paudel’s remarks came at a time when the pro-monarchists were organising rallies in Kathmandu and other parts of the country demanding reinstatement of the 240-year-old monarchy, abolished in 2008.
Paudel, in his address at the inauguration ceremony of a newly-constructed administrative building in Nechasalyan Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu district, said, “Each and every citizen is sovereign in the federal democratic republic.”
“The federal democratic republic is the system Nepali citizens gained through great sacrifices, ensuring that they would no longer remain ruled but become sovereign citizens,” he said, adding this system provides citizens the right to hold those in power accountable.
The president said, “It is the collective responsibility of the government and political parties to make citizens feel that this system guarantees their future and destiny.
“No absolutism or anarchy is acceptable for Nepalese people. History bears witness to the fact that Nepali citizens have abhorred autocracy and anarchy, whether during the 104-year-old family rule by the Ranas, the 30-year-long party-less Panchayat system, or under the absolute monarchy.”
“The federal democratic republic was not an easy gain, but the result of significant struggles, dedication, and sacrifices by the Nepalese people,” he said.
On Sunday, Nepali Congress president and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said that former King Gyanendra Shah is not suitable to become a constitutional monarch.
The pro-monarchists have become active since democracy day in February when Gyanendra said, “Time has come for us to assume responsibility to protect the country and bring about national unity.” (PTI)
