JAMMU, Apr 11: While thundershowers and gusty winds hit many parts of the Jammu and Kashmir, bringing down the temperature in the region today, wind storm uprooted several trees and broke many branches causing damage to a car and power infrastructure in Rajouri area last evening.

Rain affected the movement of smooth traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban sector while massive traffic jams were created for more than four- five hours due mud slide and single road stretch at Mehar and Cafeteria Morh area. The traffic cops had a tough time to clear the jam. Due to single road at Mehar, the traffic jam has now become a routine, the locals said alleging NH authorities have failed to take effective measures since last one month.
Due to fresh snowfall at Pir Ki Gali, Mughal Road has been closed again while several other higher passes also witnessed light snowfall in the region.
With the rain/ thundershower in many parts of the Jammu region including Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri. Ramban and Doda, a sharp fall has been recorded in the day temperature. It remained almost cloudy today in Jammu with light rain during the day. Hilly areas of Udhampur, Kathua, Ramban and Reasi experienced heavy rain for about one to 2 hours today. In some areas of Udhampur, Reasi and Rajouri, there were reports of hailstorm.
Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 29.9 degree C today which was about 7 degrees below the temperature on Thursday. Similarly, Bhaderwah town recorded a maximum temperature of 14.0 degree Celsius on Friday which was about 10 degrees below that of Thursday.
Holy township of Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a day temperature of 27.3 degrees C against yesterday’s temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius. Banihal recorded a maximum temperature of 13.1 deg C while Batote 15.5 degrees C on Friday, indicating a sharp drop in the day temperature.
A MeT official said that during next 24 hours scattered to fairly widespread light rains/ thunder storm may occur in Jammu and Kashmir. From April 13 to 17, the weather will remain dry in the region while from April 18 up to next two days the weather may turn cloudy with chances of light rain and thunderstorm at several places across the region.
Reports from Rajouri said that due to wind storm during last evening several trees were uprooted and branches of the trees were broken, specially in Tangri area where a parked Swift car was damaged as a large branch of tree fell on it. The front portion of the white Swift car was badly damaged. However, nobody was injured during these incidents. Several electric poles were damaged and cables broken during the wind storm.
With the damage caused to the power infrastructure, the electricity supply also remained suspended to many areas. The windstorm and hailstorm have also been reported from rural areas of Jammu district today.
Due to clouds and bad weather, the chopper service to Mata Vaishnodevi shrine also remained suspended for several hours today, however, the battery car operated smoothly and onfoot pilgrimage also remained smooth. The hailstorm has also damaged new crops in the border belt of Jammu region.
