LEH, Apr 30: In a major step towards strengthening higher education infrastructure in the Sham region, the CEC, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, along with Banu Prabha, Administrative Secretary, Higher Education Department, Lobzang Sherab, councillor, Khaltse constituency and Prof. Stanzin Yangdol, Principal GDC, Khaltse inaugurated the newly constructed pre-fabricated campus of Government Degree College (GDC) Khaltse today.
The event also marked the launch of a five-day admission drive-cum-bridge course aimed at increasing student enrolment and orientation for new entrants. The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Stanzin Yangdol, Principal. She spoke about the college’s evolving academic vision, the importance of the bridge course in easing the transition to college life, and acknowledged the pivotal support received from the UT Administration, CEC and former Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Padma Angmo.
Speaking on the occasion, Banu Prabha reaffirmed the UT Administration’s commitment to advancing quality higher education in remote regions of Ladakh. She lauded the college team for their tireless efforts and encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunities being made available at their doorstep.
In his address, Tashi Gyalson congratulated the people of Sham region on the inauguration of the new campus. He acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the college administration, Sham Education Committee, and local stakeholders in making the vision of GDC Khaltse a reality. He called for greater community involvement to further strengthen the institution and promote a culture of learning. “This campus is not just a structure, but a platform for shaping young minds. I urge students to stay committed to education, and assure you that LAHDC Leh will continue to extend all possible support to GDC Khaltse in the years ahead,” the CEC said. During the event, CEC also released the second edition of the college’s official newsletter titled Ser-Gi Mayon.
Councillor Khaltse, Lobzang Sherab, in his remarks, appreciated the consistent dedication of the college faculty and added, “With continued support and community cooperation, GDC Khaltse has the potential to emerge as a leading academic hub in the Sham region.”
The ceremony also featured a vibrant cultural performance by the students of GDC Khaltse, reflecting the local ethos and energy of youth. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Konchok Chhoral, Senior Assistant Professor of Political Science.
