SRINAGAR, May 6: In a move to curb online radicalisation, the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) today detained a radical social media user from the Bemina area of Srinagar.
According to officials, the detained individual, identified as Hilal Mir alias Hilal Saqi, was operating multiple social media accounts, including an X handle ‘hilal mir’ and a Facebook account ‘Mir Hilal’ to spread extremist content aimed at disturbing public peace and promoting secessionist ideology.
Officials further said Hilal’s posts often portrayed Kashmiris as victims of systemic oppression, with an aim to fuel anti-national sentiments among the youth.
“His activities were seen as a veiled attempt to incite resentment and threaten the unity and sovereignty of the country,” they said.
During the detention, digital devices including a mobile phone and a laptop were seized, officials said.
A preliminary inspection revealed incriminating material linked to the radical content and propaganda shared through his accounts, they said.
Officials also found that Hilal was in touch with foreign-based contacts suspected of involvement in subversive activities.
“It is believed that he may have been acting under instructions from adversarial elements to disrupt peace in the Valley,” officials said.
The suspect is currently under investigation, and further inquiries are underway.
