72-hour protest begins in Katra against proposed Ropeway Project

KATRA, Nov 21: A 72-hour protest has been announced by local stakeholders against the proposed installation of a ropeway in the holy town.

In a meeting held today, it was decided that local business establishments from Ban Ganga to Charan Paduka will remain shut during the protest.
Additionally, services provided by ponywalas and horse operators will also remain suspended during the agitation, said Karan Singh, a member of the Committee.
Beginning their protest, the stakeholders, including local traders and service providers expressed concerns that the ropeway project , they claimed, will adversely affect their livelihood.
The protest highlights the growing tension among the traditional service providers in the pilgrimage town of Katra, which serves as the base for the revered Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. The stakeholders have urged authorities to reconsider the project as it will adversely affect the livelihood of thousands of workers.
