LEH, Dec 28: In a step towards enhancing the efficiency of crime investigation, District Police Leh organized a one-day workshop on Forensic DNA Profiling and evidence handling techniques. The workshop aimed to equip investigating officers with advanced knowledge and practical skills in DNA profiling, evidence collection, and its critical role in crime-solving.
The workshop was chaired by Shruti Arora, SSP Leh. Presenting welcome address, she emphasized the importance of such workshops in improving investigation skills among IOs and in solving blind cases.
Dr D S Negi from CDFD Hyderabad was the forensic DNA expert on the occasion. Negi delivered a comprehensive lecture through a power point presentation, covering topics such as DNA profiling, latent fingerprints, limitations of latent fingerprints in individual identification etc, and highlighted the unmatched accuracy of DNA fingerprints in crime investigations.
He provided detailed insights into evidence handling and various sources of DNA from crime scenes, including cases of murder, rape, POCSO, disasters, terrorist attacks, air crashes, and paternity disputes and best practices for collecting, packaging, and transporting evidence, such as blood samples (both on blood cards and liquid samples in EDTA vials), to laboratories for analysis.
He presented various case studies and practical applications, illustrating DNA profiling’s role in solving complex cases using graphs and tables.
The workshop concluded with an engaging Q&A session, during which IOs raised queries about the methodology and applications of DNA profiling in investigations, as well as proper techniques for evidence collection, storage and transportation.
Dr Negi’s clear explanations and detailed answers provided participants with a solid understanding of DNA profiling’s immense potential and practical applications in crime investigations. He emphasized that DNA profiling is the most powerful scientific tool for individual identification, offering unparalleled reliability in crime investigations.
